 Raw Tamarind Chutney

Ingredients:

1/2 cup tamarind thokku (coarsely ground raw tamarind)
2 cups peanuts, roasted
8-10 green chillies
6-8 garlic cloves
1/2 cup water, for grinding

For tadka:
1/4 cup oil
1/2 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 tsp cumin
2 sprigs curry leaves
1/2 onion, diced
1/4 tsp turmeric powder
coriander leaves for garnish (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Roast the peanuts, let cool, and grind them into a coarse powder
  2. Add tamarind, green chillies, garlic cloves, enough water, and grind to a coarse paste.
  3. For tadka, heat oil in a large skillet. Add mustard and cumin seeds, curry leaves and splutter. 
  4. Add diced onion and fry until slightly golden brown. Add turmeric powder and mix.
  5. Add the coarsely ground tamarind paste to the skillet and cook for 5 min on medium heat while stirring occasionally.
  6. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. Skip this step if storing in the fridge for a week or more.
  7. Serve with hot rice and ghee.
